Rob Rob gave Merry Friars a rating of 5/5

Such a shame this place doesnt really exist any more. It morphed through a few different identities before losing its soul completely and turning into 2EZE bar. I first started going there in 1980 when it boasted the only illuminated dance floor in wales, "The Friars Bop" was the dance to do and for me newcastle brown was the drink to drink, I think it was jason spinning the records and a varied bundle of sounds he bestowed upon us. from rock n roll through ska and rock but the main stay was the sound of the times, I remember mostly tears for fears, musical youth and the like. i remember the guys break dancing, craig starr rock n rolling but most of all MUMBLY. and his introduction to me - "you an me got war" - Other people i remember from there, the guys i first went there with steve weeks, andy ferriday, russ phillips. The people i first met there - phillipa and ERIKA kerry and kevin moore, john leat were frequent visitors. the upstairs closed, it became a reggae club for a while but is now a gym. my first memories of downstairs are of an empyty bar with the shutters down. I would head down there if i needed some breathing space. it was always empty, there were 2 rooms one with the bar(always closed the other had an old juke box. i think there were pictures of paul rogers on it, could have been the sweet. I was alays far too pissed for detais by the time i got down there. In the mid 80s it became a rock/gothic type venue with andy johnson spinning the disks. that was an amazing time. andy was superceded by brian enos - penos productions - I nearly had a breakdown when that place closed. i remember the owner trying to charge 50p to go in. nearly had a riot, that idea was soon scrapped! now its all gone and the place is full of ...well young people i suppose, nothing wrong with that but i wish it was still full of me an my buddies and the sounds and the vibe we enjoyed then. That aint ever gonna happen i just hope todays regulars are getting as much out of it as we got then. Long live the Friars and Pebbles!
